Kier<\/a> has handed over the new development of the existing Mayfield School in Portsmouth, Hampshire to the Department for Education<\/a> (DfE)<\/h2>\n

This new Mayfield school is located on the eastern playing field of the existing school and has been delivered as part of the DfE\u2019s Priority Schools Building Programme<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The new building<\/a> includes 74 classrooms, a spinning studio, modern arts facilities, and a revamped pre-school nursery. The building is 9422m\u00b2 in size and will cater for over 1,200 primary and secondary pupils.<\/p>\n

A dedicated innovation laboratory has also been constructed to support STEAM learning.<\/a><\/p>\n

Elements of the former school building have been retained in the new development, including the portico entrance as well as war memorial plaques and the original 1930s clock is now on the fa\u00e7ade of the new building.<\/p>\n

Three Kier employees from the local office attended the school throughout the years and are proud to play a part in shaping its future.<\/p>\n

Kier worked with the local community throughout phase one of the project, providing 10 work placements, three jobs as well as hosting several virtual work experiences with students from surrounding colleges.<\/p>\n

The final phase of the project is underway and includes the demolition of the old building, making way for the schools extended playing fields.<\/p>\n

Works are due to complete in April 2022.<\/p>\n

A vital project to the Department for Education<\/h3>\n

Steve Topliss, contracts manager at Kier Regional Building Southern, said: \u201cThis school has been serving the local community for the past 80 years and with this new building, it will continue to do so for future generations.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt means a huge amount to me to help deliver this project, quite simply I could not be prouder to have transformed my former secondary school.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark Norris, regional director at Kier Regional Building Southern, said: \u201cWe\u2019re delighted to hand over the first phase of this vital project to the Department for Education and Mayfield School in time for the new academic year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tim Sluman project director from the Department of Education, said: \u201cHaving first visited Mayfield School in 2015, as part of the department\u2019s Priority Schools Rebuilding Programme, I am absolutely delighted to deliver this much needed new school building for Mayfield School and the north Portsmouth community, we hope the pupils and staff enjoy their state of the art new building for many years to come.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
