{"id":99003,"date":"2021-09-10T12:01:05","date_gmt":"2021-09-10T11:01:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=99003"},"modified":"2021-09-10T12:01:05","modified_gmt":"2021-09-10T11:01:05","slug":"skanska-prototype-robot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/construction-technology-news\/skanska-prototype-robot\/99003\/","title":{"rendered":"[VIDEO] Skanska develops new prototype robot"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skanska.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Skanska<\/a> has been working with a consortium of technology companies to develop a prototype robotic platform that can navigate construction sites and carry out pre-programmed activities<\/h2>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"Phrv5GiUBR8\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"COSCR: A Versatile Platform for Construction Automation\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Phrv5GiUBR8?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The robot is designed to navigate construction sites autonomously and carry out specific tasks with improved productivity, quality and safety.<\/p>\n<p>The Collaborative On-Site Construction Robot (COSCR) project is an Innovate UK project which brings together factory automation and robotics expertise from <a href=\"https:\/\/hal-robotics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HAL Robotics<\/a>, ABB and InnoTecUK, together with project management expertise from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bregroup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BRE<\/a>, site access and productisation experience from Skyjack and construction industry insight from Skanska.<\/p>\n<p>The COSCR platform comprises a robust mobile base, site sensing technology and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/asite-cde-bsi-kitemark\/91191\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BIM-linked software systems<\/a> that enable it to navigate safely and accurately around a construction site.<\/p>\n<p>The robot is designed to deliver construction activities that may otherwise be repetitive or potentially hazardous, such as drilling at height.<\/p>\n<h3>It can be operated manually or autonomously<\/h3>\n<p>In manual mode, an operator uses a controller to move the robot around the site. In autonomous mode, the robot uses its onboard sensors, as well as maps derived directly from BIM data, to navigate itself safely around the site and perform tasks that have been scheduled by the user.<\/p>\n<p>It has been developed to specific size and weight constraints to maximise its potential to access the tightest corners of any site.
