Contracts have already been awarded to over 2,200 businesses, 97% of which are UK-based.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/new-jobs-around-uk\/57423\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HS2\u2019s jobs boost<\/a> is also benefitting those in need, with bespoke initiatives designed to upskill local people who are out of work with the training and accreditation they need to secure a job on HS2.<\/p>\n<p>By providing work for tens of thousands of people in the UK right now, HS2 is helping the country to build back better after Covid-19, as part of the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/plan-for-jobs\/78958\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plan for Jobs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Key points:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>One year since PM Boris Johnson visited the Interchange station site in Solihull to announce the formal start of construction on the London-Birmingham phase of HS2<\/li>\n<li>Work has continued on HS2 throughout the Covid pandemic and over 20,000 jobs are now supported by the high capacity railway providing low carbon transport, with many thousands more jobs and UK businesses supported through the wider supply chain<\/li>\n<li>In the past twelve months, HS2 has launched its first two giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/tunnel-boring-machines\/76662\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tunnel Boring Machines<\/a>, won approval from Parliament to extend the route to Crewe, and received planning approvals for new stations at Interchange in Solihull, Curzon Street in Birmingham, and Old Oak Common in West London.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Creating jobs and enhancing\u00a0skills<\/h3>\n<p>Transport secretary, Grant Shapps, said: \u201cWhile there have been some issues with the project in the past, hitting the landmark of 20,000 jobs underlines the unstoppable momentum HS2 now has.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been an incredible year of progress as work continues across the country to deliver a new backbone of Britain\u2019s transport network, fit for the 21st century and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReaching this landmark is testament to the hard work and dedication of all those involved in the project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark Thurston, chief executive of HS2 Ltd, added: \u201cWe\u2019re enormously proud of the progress we\u2019ve made on HS2 since the Prime Minister gave us the go-ahead last year, and despite the challenges of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve already launched our first two tunnelling machines, with more to launch in the coming months, and construction of our stations and depots are well underway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHS2 is moving forward, creating jobs, enhancing\u00a0skills, benefiting UK businesses and\u00a0building\u00a0a low carbon,\u00a0high
