{"id":99039,"date":"2021-09-13T09:27:26","date_gmt":"2021-09-13T08:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=99039"},"modified":"2021-09-13T09:27:26","modified_gmt":"2021-09-13T08:27:26","slug":"materials-shortage-housebuilding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/plant-equipment-supplies-news\/materials-shortage-housebuilding\/99039\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Sector needs help\u2019: Materials shortage hampers housebuilding"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The materials shortage is halting the government\u2019s housebuilding and construction ambitions and the sector needs help, warns the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.builders.org.uk\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Federation of Builders<\/a> (NFB)<\/h2>\n<p>The NFB and House Builders Association (HBA) is calling on Government to deliver a ministerial statement urging councils to show greater flexibility on materials changes, as the shortage continues.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Beresford, chief executive of the National Federation of Builders (NFB), said: \u201cThe government cannot magic up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/plant-equipment-supplies-news\/2021-building-materials-crisis\/96690\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">building materials<\/a>, but they can ensure the impact isn\u2019t as great.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough keeping an eye on importation challenges, such as paperwork and port access and continuing to work on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/hgv-driver-shortages\/96262\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HGV driver<\/a> solutions, material issues can be improved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, the NFB and HBA is calling on the government to put out a ministerial statement telling councils they should show greater flexibility on materials changes, such as bricks, as well as not serve completion notices when a project is clearly delayed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Long term challenges such as investment in British material producers are vital, as is ensuring the global market understands what British industry needs but the government needs to also identify which imported materials we are overly reliant on, such as timber and support British industries working to solve that, such as those investing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/clt-fire-safety\/78001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cross-laminated timber<\/a> (CLT).<\/p>\n<p>The NFB and HBA say the government also needs to understand the different challenges faced because while housebuilders and construction SMEs are seeing shortages of bagged cement, bricks and tiles, those building flats are reliant on steel and concrete, which have seen steep price rises and supply constraints.<\/p>\n<p>Builders cannot wait up to 13 weeks for a council to say \u2018yes\u2019 to changing, for example, a brick type, as that brick may then be unavailable. They also cannot be served completion notices on projects, which triggers them to pay council tax on unfinished homes.<\/p>\n<p>Delays also harm homebuyers, who may struggle to retain existing lending offers and end up paying some fees multiple times.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Government is at a crossroads&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>Rico Wojtulewicz, head of housing at the House Builders Association (HBA), the housebuilding division of the NFB said, \u201cThe government is at a crossroads.
