{"id":99144,"date":"2021-09-14T12:54:24","date_gmt":"2021-09-14T11:54:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=99144"},"modified":"2021-09-14T12:54:24","modified_gmt":"2021-09-14T11:54:24","slug":"fungi-prevents-landslips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/construction-technology-news\/fungi-prevents-landslips\/99144\/","title":{"rendered":"Study to explore how fungi could prevent landslips"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Researchers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strath.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Strathclyde<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cardiff University<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.international.unina.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Naples Federico II<\/a> and engineering company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bamnuttall.co.uk\/groundengineering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BAM Ritchies<\/a>, are exploring the role of fungi in helping to prevent landslips<\/h2>\n<p>The study will explore the use of fungi and their properties in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/construction-waste-recon-soil\/92897\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strengthening soil<\/a> and reducing infiltration of rainwater, a common cause of landslips.<\/p>\n<p>The project\u2019s lead researcher, Dr Grainne El Mountassir, has received a Future Leaders Fellowship, worth \u00a31.3m over four years, from UKRI (UK Research and Innovation) for the project.<\/p>\n<p>The research will use fungi and soil collected from the UK and Italy to understand how the growth of different fungal species can be controlled to improve the engineering performance of natural soils.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Creating a biological geotextile at the soil surface\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Dr El Mountassir, a senior lecturer in Strathclyde\u2019s department of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.strath.ac.uk\/engineering\/civilenvironmentalengineering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">civil and environmental engineering<\/a>, said: \u201cFungi are incredibly resilient and adaptable. Fungi on the floors of North American forests are believed to be some of the oldest living organisms on Earth, with individual organisms dated as around 1500 years old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know a lot about the uses of fungi in making food and drink, such as bread and beer, but we know relatively little about them in other contexts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, we also know that, as fungi grow through soils to forage for nutrients, they build a 3D network of biomass that acts both to bind soil particles together but also releases products that can modify how water moves through soil.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome slopes regularly fail after periods of heavy rainfall when water infiltrates into the soil and reduces its strength.
