{"id":99278,"date":"2021-09-16T10:14:28","date_gmt":"2021-09-16T09:14:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=99278"},"modified":"2021-09-16T10:14:28","modified_gmt":"2021-09-16T09:14:28","slug":"bacteria-plasterboard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/construction-technology-news\/bacteria-plasterboard\/99278\/","title":{"rendered":"Could bacteria develop a new type of eco-friendly plasterboard?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Researchers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Bath<\/a> are exploring whether the natural properties of bacteria could develop a new type of environmentally friendly plasterboard<\/h2>\n<p>Researchers are working with Adaptavate, which makes biodegradable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/plant-equipment-supplies-news\/2021-building-materials-crisis\/96690\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plasterboard<\/a>, Breathaboard from compostable crop waste instead of gypsum.<\/p>\n<p>Microbiologists from the University of Bath\u2019s Department of Biology &amp; Biochemistry, and concrete experts from the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering have been awarded funding by the <a href=\"http:\/\/link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com\/ls\/click?upn=UKcgpMoU3fCCke0KaKHar69gtqiR5dEmWcTYyYcu7nXpX3XLr3S0IZnibZYFM-2BgceiRK_eEB1c-2Bzp2QliOE8twPE6GxkQeVoHKJCC26c15tq492jKAYLo-2F38QYlSYpJTAx0BJZtRTNb0zGd2F8N-2B19za0-2FYr78UMFIaxjBZjgkeezISjUflkq-2Fw6xBCcy86PWQU0DXtRQz-2FdicvOgD2b2msonsQaphyfFPJ7qZH9u2yrQi8aNtrIzJyu7SR-2BgWmCwAHH3nx-2BaPtU3lZ4ghLw28CZQnvGN-2BIlt22ecgq8OSaPRJEapFW1yXS8171WS-2FHaaE6APsd0GC6kDhUS-2BLJnzOoY7VQ9dnV4srtC6MLCIck97qMfyh8zitkZjcKwFo5v-2BXtDMGtS97fcWkryC41-2Bqcp8f43EIuoM6SVVq2XE-2BqBXrC8IIdMAjGO8j1ERZFLYKQfTZOC5-2FHNQS6SbZkMr08VHinA-3D-3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Biofilms Innovation Centre<\/a> (NBIC), for a six-month pilot project that aims to optimise the properties of the prototype plasterboard using their bacteria-based construction technology (BBCT).<\/p>\n<p>If successful, the plasterboard can be scaled up and developed further.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Improving biodegradable construction materials\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Dr Susanne Gebhard, senior lecturer in the university\u2019s Department of Biology and Biochemistry and the Milner Centre for Evolution and lead researcher, said: \u201cBiofilms are formed when bacteria stick together to coat a surface, as opposed to growing neat dot-shaped clumps on a petri dish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a really exciting project that will see whether we can exploit the natural biofilm-forming abilities of bacteria to function as a kind of glue that will help improve the properties of biodegradable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/plant-equipment-supplies-news\/materials-shortage-housebuilding\/99039\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">construction materials<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Ive, technical director at <a href=\"http:\/\/link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com\/ls\/click?upn=UKcgpMoU3fCCke0KaKHar5BKS9PsZ8SLDJiZGbCjMnt5g0ujFxK-2BefQYqD32H9Joqd23_eEB1c-2Bzp2QliOE8twPE6GxkQeVoHKJCC26c15tq492jKAYLo-2F38QYlSYpJTAx0BJZtRTNb0zGd2F8N-2B19za0-2FYr78UMFIaxjBZjgkeezISjUflkq-2Fw6xBCcy86PWQU0DXtRQz-2FdicvOgD2b2msonsQaphyfFPJ7qZH9u2yrQi8aNtrIzJyu7SR-2BgWmCwAHH3nx-2BaPtU3lZ4ghLw28CZQnvGN-2BIlt22ecgq8OSaPRJEZWbS9t2PJ-2B35V0tGJ-2BmgF-2Fs5KvSWOwUjvEucaUK7gLE7cD5UQI9fr56T9wlfblRalF67Iq9NuH3rd-2Bp-2FgQvdqTbXfZZ3pGHJv11tszpdnSvR4npF25CvS8XgiITa9xH201mrpuNv6qpZt4PaqSIDKINpjRZuw3NxPfpORbFvYxoA-3D-3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adaptavate<\/a>, added: \u201cGypsum is the third most used construction material and accounts for 3% of UK carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s either mined or produced from waste from coal power stations and is becoming increasingly expensive to produce.
