{"id":99484,"date":"2021-09-22T10:20:46","date_gmt":"2021-09-22T09:20:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=99484"},"modified":"2022-07-01T15:59:26","modified_gmt":"2022-07-01T14:59:26","slug":"digital-twin-portsmouth-port","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/digital-twin-portsmouth-port\/99484\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a31.5m project to deliver digital twin of Portsmouth port"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>As part of a \u00a31.5m project,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iotics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IOTICS<\/a> will create a digital twin of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portsmouth-port.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Portsmouth International Port<\/a> to demonstrate an achievable modular green hydrogen generation system within the Port<\/h2>\n<p>Portsmouth International Port is the UK&#8217;s largest and most successful municipal port, operated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portsmouth.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Portsmouth City Council<\/a>, and is one of the sites of the new Solent Freeport.<\/p>\n<p>The Shipping, Hydrogen &amp; Port Ecosystems UK (SHAPE UK) project is part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-transport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department for Transport<\/a> and delivered in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/innovate-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Innovate UK<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is committed to becoming the first carbon-neutral UK port by 2030, and the first zero-emission port by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>IOTICS and its partners will create a digital twin of the port, interoperating with existing and emerging data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/port-infrastructure-fund\/83451\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">port infrastructure<\/a> and its activities as well as gathering data from the working hydrogen electrolyser.<\/p>\n<p>The IOTICS-enabled semantically defined digital twins, interoperating with data sources uncovered by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kn-i.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KnowNow<\/a>\u00a0and deployed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barterforthings.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barter4Things<\/a>\u00a0will be an amalgamation to virtualise both dockside and offshore activities.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cp.catapult.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connected Places Catapult<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.port.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Portsmouth University<\/a>\u00a0will leverage data from the digital twins within the port ecosystem to enhance and optimise operations with decision-support tools.<\/p>\n<p>The digital twin approach will create a scalable model that is translatable for other ecosystems, use cases and locations, offering a flexible foundation for further development.<\/p>\n<h3>The value of a digital twin approach<\/h3>\n<p>Jerry Clarke, senior project manager at Portsmouth International Port, said: \u201cAs a port operating in the heart of a major city, and that is owned by the people of Portsmouth, we have an obligation to do everything we can to minimise our impact as we continue to grow in the coming years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie Peachey, head of customer success at IOTICS, said:<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u201cThis project gives us many options to showcase the value of a digital twin approach by reusing data across different use cases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be looking at the business benefits for deploying renewable and clean fuels as well as the logistics of refuelling onshore equipment and sea-going vessels in a busy port.
