The legislation put the UK on the map to become the first major economy to set net zero emissions target in law.\r\n\r\nIt refers to the balance between the amount of greenhouse gas produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere. Zero emissions is achieved when the amount added is no more than the amount taken away.\r\n\r\nA net zero building is a building with zero net energy consumption, meaning the total amount of energy used by the building on an annual basis is roughly equal to the amount of renewable energy created on the site, or nearby.\r\n\r\nIn April 2019, the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) published its first framework definition for net zero buildings, along with a target for achieving this for all new buildings by 2030 and all existing building by 2050.\r\n\r\nAround 19% of the UK\u2019s emissions come from heating buildings \u2013 77% from homes and 23% from commercial and public buildings. So, it is vital to find ways of cutting emissions from heating.\r\n\r\nSignificant progress has been made towards designing and building a more sustainable future, however there remains a huge way to go. It requires a collaborative effort and cultural shift from all stakeholders across the built environment.\r\n\r\nIt is estimated that to meet the government's goals by 2050, the construction industry
