{"id":155172,"date":"2024-03-13T09:00:51","date_gmt":"2024-03-13T09:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?post_type=webinar&#038;p=155172"},"modified":"2025-10-06T09:44:03","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T08:44:03","slug":"misconceptions-of-digital-twin-a-deeper-dive-into-the-meaning","status":"publish","type":"webinar","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/webinar\/misconceptions-of-digital-twin\/155172\/","title":{"rendered":"FARO: Misconceptions of &#8220;Digital Twin&#8221;: A Deeper Dive into the Meaning"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>On 5th March, a panel of experts in the AEC industry, in collaboration with PBC Today, came together to discuss the misconceptions of the term &#8216;digital twin&#8217; in a free webinar<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/faro-technologies-digital-twins-pbc-webinar\/137057\/\">Hosted by FARO Technologies,<\/a> the panel was led by Adam North, account manager at FARO Technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Derek Lawrence, a chartered design engineer at Twindl, Ian Jenkins, a senior remote sensing specialist at ARUP, and Matthew Davies, an account manager for UK South at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faro.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FARO Technologies<\/a>, also participated in the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the webinar, polls were put forward to the audience for a discussion on various relevant topics, alongside a live Q&amp;A.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Misconceptions of Digital Twin: A Deeper Dive into the Meaning\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/922364833?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>What is a digital twin, and how do we define it?<\/h3>\n<p>The panel kicks off with Matthew Davies, account manager, UK South, FARO Technologies, who simplifies the concept of a digital twin in the AEC industry.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew defines a digital twin as a &#8216;digital model of a real-world product or process&#8217;, which is a dynamic process throughout the lifecycle of a building and has an essential role in enhancing decision-making and efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Common barriers associated with digital twins were also addressed, including perceptions that they are too complicated, require specialised expertise, are costly, and may not suit smaller-scale projects.<\/p>\n<h3>Exploring real-life uses of digital twins and laser scanning technology<\/h3>\n<p>In the next part of the webinar, Derek Lawrence, a reality capture specialist and chartered building services engineer, discusses his background and entry into reality capture.<\/p>\n<p>He shares a project with Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, using laser scanning techniques to engage the public in understanding the complex structure of the River Sherbourne in Coventry.<\/p>\n<p>Lawrence employs a backpack scanner for above-ground data and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faro.com\/en\/Products\/Hardware\/Traceable-3D-Laser-Scanning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FARO Traceable 3D system<\/a> for challenging below-ground environments.<\/p>\n<h3>What is the difference between a digital model and a twin?<\/h3>\n<p>Derek then hands over to Ian Jenkins, Arup&#8217;s reality capture expert.
