Background

ProntoCalc was created in 2012 by Nick Cook, a general builderwith over 25 years running his own business in the Construction Industry. Over the years, Nick has worked on a vast variety of projects with clients from all backgrounds.

During this time it became evident that there was a common problem amongst contractors when pricing projects: days or even weeks can be spent producing quotes, with prices often being recalled by memory. All too often, this time is wasted when the contract is awarded to someone with no real schedule of costs to back up their underestimated quote. Nick has also gained experience in how this has an extremely detrimental effect on clients too – watch the case study at the bottom of this page to see an example…

Because of this situation the construction industry has taken a bit of a battering in recent years, with so-called ‘Cowboy Builders’ constantly being shown in  the media, ultimately giving rise to  a general feeling of distrust towards the industry as a whole. Nick’s experiences have led him to the conclusion that the best way to overcome this is to conduct business with an open and honest method of communication – thereby bringing back credibility to the hardworking Builder.

ProntoCalc has been designed to provide an easy to use calculating system that assists Self-Builders, Builders and Architects in accurately producing a schedule of costs. By entering a few details of a build, the full calculation of costs is made.  An example of our thinking was that with just one figure, the length of the foundation trench, we are able to cost the excavation, waste away, concrete pour and masonry work up to the floor level. These items are then quantified in a detailed 10 page PDF quote that can be directly sent to clients.

We also know that every project is unique and every user will have slightly different costs/budgets. This is where we introduced the most crucial part of pricing a project – flexibility. Firstly, the user can select from a choice of three building grades and eight site locations which varies the project item rate (cost of each item). This system means that anywhere in the country, an accurate understanding of a project cost can be achieved. Users can also manually adjust all of their costs by changing the OA (Operational Adjustment) at any time – by increasing or decreasing the % rate all costs will be adjusted by that %.  We have entered our own default costs for each item but users can change the individual rates as they work through a project or enter their own personal price list in the ‘Default Costs’ section, which is then saved and used on each subsequent project. Furthermore, any additional costs or omissions that have not been specified by the system can also be added under ‘Variations’.
