Thanet Council Building Control

About Us

Building Control

Building Regulations apply to building work in England and Wales and set standards for the design and construction of buildings to ensure the safety and health of people in or about those buildings. They also include requirements to ensure that fuel and power is conserved and facilities are provided for people, including those with disabilities, to access and move around inside buildings. It is important to understand how to comply and the consequences of not complying.

Building Regulations approval is a separate matter from obtaining planning permission for your work. Similarly, receiving any planning permission which your work may require is not the same as taking action to ensure that it complies with the Building Regulations.

Further details of Building Regulations and associated legislation can be found at the Planning Portal where you can also view the Interactive House to check whether consent will be required. Guidance on when Competent Person Schemes can provide an alternative to the submission of a formal application can be obtained from the Building Work, replacements and repairs to your home pages of the DCLG website.

Information in relation to electrical works can also be found at: http://www.electricalcompetentperson.co.uk/  and http://www.electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk/guides-and-advice

If you are hoping to carry out work to your home our Guide to Extending Your Home will provide inspiration and guide you through the process.
