The Construction Industry Council (CIC) has taken on new chairman, it has emerged. Professor John Nolan was inaugurated during the 100th meeting of its council members.

Professor Nolan will remain in the position for two years, with immediate effect, and replaces Tony Burton. Burton, who is a senior partner at Gardiner & Theobald, will become deputy chairman for a year in accordance with the bylaws and rules of the CIC.

Nolan started his career as a labourer and eventually founded two engineering consultancies, one of which (Nolan Associates) he still chairs. He is the past president of the Institution of Structural Engineers and a Fellow of that Institution and the Institution of Civil Engineers. He has more than 40 years experience within the sector, and has been responsible for projects up to the value of ÂŁ300m.

He also founded and is the chair of a property development firm, as well as a non-executive director of a power company.

The CIC was founded in 1988 to represent professional bodies, research organisations, and specialist business associations within the construction industry. It provides a single voice for the built environment.
