The Mill Yard site in Cambridge has closed operations until further notice after a contractor was fatally injured earlier this week
Developer Railpen contracted Morgan Sindall for the £90m mixed-use project(formerly known as Devonshire Gardens) and work began in January of this year.
The development includes 110,000 sq ft of offices, 70 build-to-rent flats, a series of residential former railway cottages and a cluster of shops across seven buildings set around a 1.55-acre public park.
A Morgan Sindall Construction spokesperson said:
“Sadly, a contractor working on our Mill Road project in Cambridge was fatally injured at the site the afternoon of Monday 21st July. Our thoughts and condolences are first and foremost with the family and friends.
“We are working in full cooperation with the emergency services and relevant health and safety officials as part of a full and thorough investigation. The construction site is currently closed and will remain closed until all appropriate investigations are completed.”
A spokesperson on behalf of Railpen said:
“A serious incident occurred on Monday, July 21 at the Mill Yard site in Cambridge. A construction worker sustained fatal injuries during the incident and, while emergency services attended the scene and provided medical care, sadly the individual could not be saved.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to family, friends and colleagues, and support is being provided to all those affected. We have been working closely with the relevant authorities and our partners to respond to this incident. The construction site will remain closed until further notice.”
Work was projected to finish in January 2027.
