The LR12500-1.0 has a max-rated load capacity of 2,500 tonnes, with a maximum hoist height of 200 metres and a operating reach up to 180 metres
Mammoet has purchased two new giant crawler cranes, one of which is already confirmed for an unnamed UK project.
As projects such as wind turbines get taller, the machinery to install them grows in tandem. The Liebherr LR11350 and LR12500-1.0 cranes acquired by Mammoet will enable the company’s ambitions for growth in the renewables sector.
Liebherr released the LR12500-1.0 to the global market in 2022
The LR12500-1.0 is one of the largest crawler cranes made by Liebherr, beaten only by its bigger LR13000 sibling – a 3,000t capacity crawler that Mammoet also has in its fleet.
The LR11350 has a maximum load capacity of 1,350t and a hoist height of 220 meters. It will join ten other machines that Mammoet has in its fleet with a capacity of 1,000 to 1,350t.
The LR12500-1.0’s 2,500t lifting power comes from its wide main boom. It has a hoist height of 200 meters, and its modular design makes it easy to transport.
Hinkley Point C’s Big Carl can lift twice as many tonnes as the LR12500-1.0 across a radius of 40 metres. But that crane is fixed on a ring and mounted platform, meaning it lacks the crawler crane’s ability to move itself.
The giant crawler crane will be the eleventh in Mammoet’s fleet with a capacity of between 1,000 to 1,350 tonnes
Peter van Oostrom, Global Projects and Assets director at Mammoet, said: “To ensure we continue to have a crane fleet best fitting market requirements and most modern fleet of cranes in the world, it is important that we invest in new machines from leading manufacturers.
“Liebherr is a worldwide supplier and the logical choice for cranes of this capacity.
“We therefore see it being in very high demand, particularly for offshore wind projects”.
Christoph Kleiner, managing director at Liebherr said: “Mammoet has been a key partner to Liebherr for many years, providing valuable input into the development of new crane hardware. Its insight into usability and future capacity requirements is invaluable.
“We have a strong relationship with Mammoet and are delighted it has added two more Liebherr cranes to its world-class fleet”.
The two cranes are scheduled to work on key upcoming projects in the UK (LR12500-1.0) and the Netherlands (LR11350).
