New research shows a significant number of UK construction firms are operating with a low carbon strategy in place…

A survey from publishing and marketing services firm TomTom Telematics has revealed three-quarters of UK construction companies are committed to the environment.

The survey of 149 construction companies found 75 per cent of companies have enacted a low carbon or carbon reduction strategy, while some 74 per cent said they favoured suppliers that offer low carbon strategies.

Additionally, some 58 per cent of respondents said they regularly monitored their carbon footprint, while 51 per cent said clients ask for carbon emission data as a key performance indicator.

The survey also identified that fleet operations, which are a major contributor to CO2 emissions, only see a small amount of firms use telematics systems to reduce fuel consumption.

TomTom Telematics sales director UK and Ireland Giles Margerison said: “Sixty-eight per cent of companies we spoke to have systems and processes in place to reduce fuel consumption across their vehicle fleet and, of these, only 23 per cent use a telematics system to do so.

“Fleet operations are a major source of CO2 emissions but the data provided by technology such as telematics allows companies to pinpoint trends and tackle the root causes of fuel wastage.”

Some 52 per cent of respondents said congestion on the roads was the main driver of unnecessary fuel consumption. Only 11 per cent identified vehicle idling and inefficient routing as a problem.

The survey also revealed that 95 per cent of respondents believe the industry could do more to reduce the amount of carbon emissions.
