The Get It Right Initiative is a not-for-profit membership organisation actively improving productivity, quality, sustainability and safety in the construction sector by eliminating error.

Our 130+ members include major clients, contractors, consultants and specialists from across the industry. Together we are working to raise awareness of the challenges of error and eliminate it through:

Understanding the true cost of error

Our research shows that error costs the UK construction industry up to £25 billion each year.

When we break down the cost of an average UK construction project, the direct cost of error is around 5% – well above the average profit levels in the sector. Indirect and unmeasured costs including latent defects and unrecorded process waste account for another 16% of project costs. This brings the total cost of error up to 25% of the total project cost.

Tackling the root causes of error

Design was identified as a factor in five of the top ten root causes of error in our research. To address these challenges and support all construction professionals, GIRI developed the Design Guide e-learning course.

The Design Guide e-learning course is a self-paced, flexible programme that helps construction professionals to reduce error in the design process. The course takes around two hours to complete. The e-learning can be completed in stages, with progress saved along the way. It is free to access.

For a systematic approach to error reduction, GIRI has developed the Error Reduction Framework. This standardised, structured, step-by-step process that can be used by companies, organisations and project teams to systemically identify, diagnose and reduce errors.

Currently being piloted by GRAHAM Construction, the GIRI Error Reduction Framework uses a systems change approach to deliver change within the complex environment of the construction industry.

Changing culture and behaviours

GIRI’s accredited training empowers organisations, project teams and individuals to get it right first time. Developed by industry for industry, the training courses help to reduce the frequency and cost of error in construction by ensuring all industry workers develop the right skills to collaboratively understand, pre-empt and avoid error in their daily work.

A recent evaluation report found that GIRI training is estimated to have approximately halved the predicted cost of error on the projects evaluated. Four major construction organisations assessed that they had avoided £92.6 million in error across 25 projects, representing a saving of 9.83% of total project value.

Sharing knowledge and best practice

GIRI members come from across the construction industry, bringing their expertise, experience and insight to our mission to tackle error in construction.

Members come together for face to face meetings and online working groups to share best practice, examples of error reduction in practice and innovations in technology and process. Industry experts and policy makers are regular speakers at GIRI events.
