The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) has launched a new corporate strategy putting climate action at the heart of all its activities over the next 10 years

The climate action strategy, described as ‘bold and ambitious’, was formally launched by the chair of the Board of Trustees, Sue Bridge RTPI, at the RTPI’s General Assembly at the Royal Society of Arts in London.

For the first time, all members, stakeholders and the public have been consulted to establish a clear direction that meets the needs of all.

Driven by an ambition to promote healthy, socially inclusive, economically and environmentally sustainable places, the RTPI has included four pillars in the 10-year plan – the value of membership, supporting planning services, raising the profile of planning and equality, diversity and inclusivity.

Underpinning the whole plan is an urgent need to address the climate crisis.

The full strategy can be seen here.

Planning is pivotal in achieving global sustainable developments

Sue Bridge said: “The Boards’ ambition is that the institute works to support a robust, sustainable and growing profession that is well resourced and respected.

“Through many months of consultation it is clear to me that we need to evolve with the ever-changing role of planners to ensure that we continue to add value to their professional lives.

“We are confident that our 2020-2030 strategy is robust and it supports our objectives as set out in our Royal Charter.”

Victoria Hills, chief executive of the RTPI, added: “The role of planning is pivotal in achieving global sustainable development and planners sit at the vanguard of the solution to the climate crisis.

“Our response is holistic and therefore actions sit across all pillars of our bold and ambitious strategy.

“The future of the RTPI is bright and this is a robust framework that provides us with direction, a strategy for delivery and ambition to drive it in a convincing and timely way.”
