recyclable pallet hoods

Building materials manufacturer Knauf has marked another step towards achieving their sustainability goals by switching to more recyclable pallet hoods used on their laminated boards

The switch towards more recyclable pallet hoods is another step towards the businesses’ zero waste disposal by 2032.

The move to 30% recycled content in their pallet hoods represents a real win at scale, given the number of hoods used. The 30% recycled content in pallet hoods used provides an environmentally friendly solution whilst ensuring the robust strength of the plastic (which is also easier to recycle on site) without being detrimental to the customer.

Switching to more recyclable pallet hoods strikes the right balance between strength and sustainability

Hannah Wrigley-Stevens, Buyer at Knauf, was enthusiastic about this change. She commented: “Moving to 30% recyclable content for our pallet hoods strikes the right balance between strength and sustainability. It also shows that we are serious about achieving our sustainability goals.

“This is something that we feel our customers will care deeply about, given that not only are the hoods made from recyclable content they are themselves recyclable and can be recycled in standard plastic recycling.”

“We are currently in the process of updating our customers on these changes to ensure they are fully aware of the recyclable nature of the pallet hoods and why this matters. This includes updating our artwork to state this.”

Knauf has also announced that they are trialling the use of 30% recyclable content in their stretch wrap

Hannah Wrigley-Stevens added: “We’re currently looking at making our stretch wrap more sustainable and recyclable. Now we are trialling the 30% model across all our products at both our sites at Sittingbourne and Immingham.”

“We’ve seen some very positive developments during the trial periods in both areas. This includes a gram saving and a reduction in micron of plastic which means that the weight of the plastic has been reduced.”

Across Knauf’s range of products, the company is very conscious about incorporating sustainability. Knauf’s plasterboard is manufactured from the most sustainable sources of gypsum available, and only 100% recycled paper liners are used.

Their plasterboard and metal systems products are also durable and simple to recycle. The company also works with contractors to reduce on-site waste and increase its recycling capacity.

Examples of Knauf products achieving sustainability ratings include:

  • Knauf systems achieve ‘A’ ratings in BRE’s Green Guide to Specification
  • The insulating Laminate range provides instant energy saving
  • Plasterboard is easily recyclable
  • AQUAPANEL® prevents tile failures and associated waste from damaged materials
  • Safeboard X-ray plasterboard removes the need for lead in X-ray departments
  • Brio dry screed boards reduce the ongoing energy usage of a building by improving the efficiency of underfloor heating systems
  • High-performance plasterboards reduce the volume of material required for a site by reducing the number of layers required for a given performance.
