A scaffolding firm has been fined after untied and sheeted scaffolding fell, hitting a bus and pedestrians earlier this year…

Emperor Scaffolding Ltd has received a significant fine after the firm failed to secure scaffolding correctly. The structure then fell, striking a bus, a van, and pedestrians during the dismantling operation in January 2015.

The case, which was brought before Leicester Magistrates’ Court, revealed how the incident unfolded on Charles Street. During the accident, damage was caused to a bus and a parked van. Two member of the public were also hit by falling debris.

Investigators from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found the firm had failed to tie the scaffold to the building and had left the sheeting in place when dismantling. Workers did not check the condition of the scaffolding before disassembling the structure.

Emperor Scaffolding Ltd was fined £8,000 with costs of £2,000 after pleading guilty to offences under Regulation 28(1) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.

Speaking after the hearing HSE inspector Martin Giles said: “Scaffolding needs to be tied to a building and dismantling needs to be properly planned and carried out in a safe manner.”
