New plans have been unveiled by builders’ merchant chain Travis Perkins to open 400 new depots over the next four years…

Travis Perkins has announced plans to open 400 new branches, creating 4,000 new jobs. The majority of these new roles will be outside London and the South East.

The investment programme, which will cost £150-£200m a year, will see the new branches supported by either new distribution facilities across the UK or by extending existing ones.

The expansion programme will involve Travis Perkins, Wickes, Toolstation, Benchmarx and its Plumbing & Heating and Contracts divisions.

The company, which currently employs more than 24,000 staff, has almost 2,000 branches across the UK and made revenues of £5.6bn in 2014.

Chief Executive John Carter said the recruitment programme would include 200 branch managers and assistant managers a year, as well as skilled IT professionals, and supply chain specialists. The company will also create 170 apprenticeships.

“Travis Perkins’ ability to create 4,000 new jobs reflects confidence in our businesses, the markets we operate in and the UK economy as whole,” he said.

“This confidence is supported by a number of actions taken by the Government over the past two years, including the new Help to Buy ISA announced yesterday, that are continuing to support construction activity and improvements in consumer confidence.

“We are making significant investments to improve our customer proposition and in our supply chain to offer superior ranges, availability and value propositions.”
