More than 40 bespoke wooden panels reclaimed from company sites were slotted together in a bench at Mace’s London headquarters to mark the start of Pride Month

‘Our Pride Unity Installation’ is a collaborative installation at Mace’s global headquarters in London, debuted in celebration of the start of Pride Month.

Pride month is celebrated every June by the LGBTQIA+ community and allies, allowing everyone to embrace and accept diversity. It is also a time to consider and discuss LGBTQIA+ issues, including areas where work still needs to be done.

This is especially resonant for the construction industry, with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) saying that 60% of LGBTQ+ employees have experienced homophobic and derogatory terms at work.

In 2018, Stonewall found that more than a third of LGBTQ+ staff in Britain have hidden or disguised their identity at work because they are afraid of discrimination.

The sustainably sourced sculpture encourages conversation

The sculpture was created using sustainable materials, some of which were reclaimed from the construction company’s sites.

The elements of the sculpture were cut and painted on several different sites by different trades in a joint effort before being assembled.

It had been designed to encourage organic conversations by creating a striking talking point and place to congregate that creates unity among colleagues, friends and strangers.

The sculpture will be located in the lobby of Mace’s Moorgate office until the conclusion of Pride Month and will then be moved to the in-house café for continued use by Mace staff.

Mace’s Pride Month activities follow their commitment to diversity

Mace’s 2026 Business Strategy outlines the aspiration to become the most inclusive employer of choice in the industry.

In light of this, an employee network group called “Pride at Mace” is dedicated to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all employees.

Ian McIver, co-chair of the Pride at Mace Employee Network Group, said:

“We know there are untold benefits to having a truly diverse workplace – from increased innovation to the wisdom of different viewpoints – and we are delighted to be supporting Pride Month in this unique way.

“We hope the sculpture will be a place for colleagues, friends and strangers to gather, reflect and discuss diversity and inclusion for all of June, and beyond.

“The legacy of what we have created together will live on at Mace long after Pride Month has ended, as it will be moved to our café to continue this important conversation among our colleagues as we, as a sector, continue to become more inclusive.’’

The company is further marking the month by taking part in the Pride in London Parade, from Hyde Park Corner to Whitehall Place, on 1 July.
