Stourbridge College in the Midlands is set to open a £1.5m construction centre in September…

Work is underway on a new construction centre that will offer training to young people in Stourbridge. The £1.5m centre is expected open at Stourbridge College in September.

The state-of-the-art learning facility will offer training for those studying carpentry, plumbing, gas and electrical installation, construction management, and surveying.

It will be located at the Hagley Road college campus and will increase the number of full-time students on construction and related courses to 350.

Speaking to Stourbridge News, head of Stourbridge College Wendy Stevens said: “Our new construction centre is an exciting development for Stourbridge College enabling more students to benefit from state-of-the-art facilities and gaining the skills and qualifications they need.

“Increasing our student body will further invigorate the college with students having access to all of our resources and support services including careers advice and guidance with university and job applications.”

Speller Metcalfe will be the contractor for the centre and Worcester Bosch will provide equipment.

Speller Metcalfe’s managing director Des O’Neill said: “Speller Metcalfe is delighted to be a part of this exciting development for Stourbridge College.

“As an industry, construction is facing a big skills gap across trade and professional occupations, and we are proud to be part of a project that will not only provide state-of-the-art facilities, but will help produce skilled and qualified trades people for years to come.”
