In this episode of the Premier Guarantee Insite Podcast, Premier Guarantee’s senior technical director Stephen Cahill, and senior regulatory specialist, Matt Shum, discuss the importance of encouraging apprentices and graduates into the construction industry

This episode of the Premier Guarantee Insite Podcast focuses on the importance of apprentices and graduates when training the future of the construction industry and what the sector needs to do to keep and retain its talent.

According to the CITB, there are currently 2.66 million people working in the UK construction industry. However, to meet the expected construction demands, another 225,000 workers are needed between now and 2027.

The biggest demand that the industry is facing is the demand for housing, and one of the best ways to help meet these demands and tap into new talent is through apprentices and graduates. To tackle this challenge, Premier Guarantee has onboarded 60 surveyor trainees.

Premier Guarantee’s graduate training programme offers experience in surveying and practical knowledge

Stephen Cahill explores Premier Guarantee’s training programme: “We have a programme open to graduates, and also a course for apprentices where we will put them through a course at university.

The graduate programme is open to recent university graduates who are looking for a career in surveying. We then take them and give them experience in surveillance and practical knowledge, and will be assigned o a team where they will go out and site with surveyors.”

What does the graduate training cohort look like?

“There’s a variety. Some have graduated, and some of them are still studying and completing their degree. There are varying levels of experience.”

Matt Shum adds: “When the graduates have finished their focus training and starting to go out onto more sites, it doesn’t stop there. With Premier Guarantee, the focus on technical training is ongoing, and we build that knowledge for more complex areas.”

The cohort features both men and women. Stephen explores the story of one of the graduates, who transferred to the scheme after working for Premier Guarantee for several years and expressed a desire to work in construction.

“Premier Guarantee is a company that prides itself in knowledgeable, competent staff and doing the right thing. It’s important that we do undertake that training and deliver quality training that’s actually suited to what we’re doing on-site for ourselves, for our clients and ultimately for the end user.”
