Amey has announced that it has been named as the preferred bidder for the improved North East roads maintenance contract

The North East roads maintenance contract is worth up to an estimated £540m, and will begin on 16 August and run for eight years, with potential to extend for a further four years.

Amey teams will be completing maintenance work covering:

  • The implementation of an enhanced winter and incident response service
  • Requirement to provide better journey reliability
  • Enhanced communications
  • Incorporate new technology for better management of trunk network assets and contracts, and for delivery of maintenance activities

A key part of the new North East roads maintenance contract is delivering net zero targets, where measures have been highlighted to deliver lower carbon emissions on the trunk road network.

These targets include having at least 50% of their car and van fleet be ultra-low carbon emissions by 2025, and installing electric vehicle charge points at central offices.

There will also be dedicated electric vehicle charging parking spaces and the signage to support the operation of ultra-low emission vehicles.

Amey expects to complete contract signing by the end of April.
