Mace and Jacobs have been appointed to manage the regeneration of the former Athens airport and the neighbouring coastal front, The Ellinikon

Mace and Jacobs have been appointed by Hellinikon S.A., a subsidiary of LAMDA Development S.A, as Program Management Consultant and Project Management Consultant for Buildings on the greatest regeneration investment ever in Greece.

The project will see the transformation of the six million square metre site into an iconic urban landscape that sets a new benchmark in sustainable and smart design. The two million square meter Metropolitan Park will sit right at the centre of the development and the green space will be one of the largest coastal parks in the world.

The scheme will enhance the area’s existing natural beauty and unique design features with an integrated urban development model consisting of iconic building structures and state-of-the-art infrastructure.

Climate-positive design has been integrated throughout the project in order to increase energy efficiency, reduce overall energy use and minimise carbon emissions. By promoting biodiversity, active travel and incorporating electric vehicle facilities, the project hopes to make a positive impact on the environment.

Economy

Once completed, The Ellinikon will attract in excess of one million new tourists each year – putting Athens amongst the premier travel destinations in the world.

In terms of the local economy, the scheme will provide tens of thousands of jobs. During the construction stage, it is estimated that 10,000 jobs will be made available and 75,000 jobs (IOBE study, July 2016) during its maturity.

The joint venture

Mace and Jacobs will be managing the overall Program as well as the buildings portfolio. The latter will oversee the building of avant-garde structures: a sophisticated shopping complex, luxury retail, modern office space and the first high rise residential project in Athens.
