Kier has been appointed to redevelop and deliver four key NHS projects on the Isle of Wight at St Mary’s Hospital

A series of NHS projects on the Isle of Wight designed to improve services at St Mary’s Hospital will be delivered by Kier, the Isle of Wight NHS Trust has announced.

As part of the Trust’s, £22m investment in its capital development programme, the current infrastructure and estate at St Mary’s Hospital will be redeveloped and improved.

As part of the NHS projects, Kier will deliver:

  • Project A – an integrated mental health and community hub in Newport High Street, providing treatment and talking therapy rooms and tele-hubs for telemedicine appointments.
  •  Project B – a high-dependency care unit at St Mary’s Hospital to improve patient flow and increase the hospital’s capacity to provide specialist services.
  •  Project C – an emergency care floor at St Mary’s Hospital, co-locating the existing emergency department, urgent treatment centre and short-stay facilities, improving treatment room size and access to diagnostics.
  •  Project D – acute bed reconfiguration at St Mary’s Hospital, providing a new 18-bed acute ward enabling better use of beds and separating planned and emergency inpatient care.

The planned NHS projects on the Isle of Wight will facilitate better patient management

The improvements will increase the hospital’s capacity to deal with emergencies and provide a broader range of elective services by splitting admissions into hot (acute or non-elective) and cold (planned care or elective) zones.

This should allow staff to manage admissions more quickly, improving care efficiency.

David McKenzie, managing director for Kier Construction, London and Southern, said: “This project will transform healthcare on the Isle of Wight. We’re proud to continue our work for the Trust, delivering outstanding healthcare facilities for the people of Newport.

“During the project, we’ll also provide wider social benefits to the community by offering work placements and apprenticeships, volunteering at the hospital and local charities, and engaging with local schools.”

Continuing Kier’s long-standing successful relationship with the Trust

Kier has delivered various projects at St Mary’s Hospital over the past 11 years. This includes multiple refurbishment projects, such as the Pathology Unit and dementia-friendly wards and reconfiguring and refurbishing the emergency department.

Deputy director of estates and facilities, Rob Graham, said: “We are delighted to be working with Kier to deliver the first phase of our Investing in Our Future investment programme. The four projects will enable our hospital and community services to provide high quality and sustainable care to our community in new and improved facilities.”
