Plans for a £25m mixed-use scheme submitted

A planning application for a new housing and retail development on the site of the former Walton Hospital, Merseyside, has been submitted for approval.

Mulbury Homes has submitted a planning proposal for a multi-million pound project in Walton, Merseyside.

The development will be built on the site of Walton Hospital and will comprise of 195 homes. This will include affordable and private market housing. The site, which spans 13.5 acres, will also see an Aldi supermarket constructed.

The land has been vacant since Walton Hospital was demolished in August 2011. Planning consultants on the development will be JLL. Eden Building Design worked as the designers on the housing development side of the project, while The Harris Partnership and Vector Design Concepts are working with Aldi.

Director of Mulbury Homes Greg Mulligan said: “Following consultation with local authority planners and the community, we’re pleased to be able to bring these exciting regeneration plans forward.

“Not only does this scheme increase the supply of housing locally, it also brings new shopping amenities to the area through our partnership with Aldi, revitalising a vacant site on a key gateway into Liverpool.”

Property Director for Aldi, George Brown, said: “Aldi is committed to investing in the city of Liverpool and this application represents another multi-million pound venture, alongside the creation of up to 40 new jobs for local people.

“We’ve received a good response from the local community and residents have said they’d welcome an Aldi food store closer to them.”

According to Mulbury Homes a total of 101 affordable properties will be created on the site for shared equity sale and rent. A further 70 properties will be sold on the open market, and 24 apartments will be managed by a social housing provider.

The site has been designed with existing housing in the area in mind. This includes the Grade II listed clock tower building that dates back to the 1860s and was turned into residential apartments. The development will also sit adjacent to the recently opened Clock View Hospital.

During the consultation process over a hundred people viewed the plans, which were displayed during a public exhibition on Thursday 23 April. If the proposal is approved work could start as early as the autumn. Construction work on the supermarket would start immediately, with the aim of opening in the spring of 2016.

Liverpool City Council will make a decision on the application in the coming weeks.
