Turner & Townsend has been chosen to deliver the Dublin MetroLink programme – Ireland’s first metro railway

Turner & Townsend will work on the Dublin MetroLink programme alongside O’Connor Sutton Cronin, Mace, PwC and WSP.

The MetroLink will be the single biggest investment in transport infrastructure in Ireland’s history. The project is part of the integrated transport system for the Greater Dublin Area (GDA).

The Dublin MetroLink will provide transport options to new areas of the city

The Dublin MetroLink will span 18.8km across 16 new stations. Stations will run from Swords to the north of Dublin and Charlemont in the south.

It is estimated that the Dublin MetroLink will carry around 50 million passengers each year.

The network will work in tandem with Dublin’s existing air, rail, Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART), Dublin Bus and Luas services.

The new metro system will provide a direct line to Dublin Airport from the city centre and will stop and key locations such as Ballymun, O’Connell Street and St. Stephen’s Green.

The MetroLink will reduce travel times by approximately 25 minutes

Travel times from Swords to Dublin City Centre will be reduced by around 25 minutes, with much of the journey taking place underground. 30 trains will travel in each direction every hour.

“The appointment of Turner & Townsend to the role of Client Partner represents a key milestone in the development of the MetroLink project and underlines the Irish State’s commitment to delivering this much-needed project,” commented Aidan Foley, MetroLink project director for Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

Helping Ireland create more sustainable transport infrastructure

The Dublin MetroLink will support Ireland’s conversion to a low-emissions transport system while helping the country’s sustainable economic development and easing the pressures of population growth.

Each construction company involved in the project has been appointed to a framework which runs for 13 years until 2036, with immediate effect.

12 years have been allocated for the development and construction of the MetroLink, with an extra year added to bring the service into operation.

Turner & Townsend have worked as commercial advisors on the MetroLink programme since 2018. Alongside various partners and a multidisciplinary team, the company will provide programme management office (PMO) services on the project.

Turner & Townsend will also oversee procurement, design, engineering, safety, information management and sustainability.

“Major programmes like MetroLink offer a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the way people travel across the capital, connecting communities both inside and outside Dublin with an efficient, low-carbon public transport service,” said Gary Easton, infrastructure lead for Turner & Townsend.
