Kier has utilised Revizto’s Digital by Default software to digitalise project information for Fitzalan High School, winning a CEW Award

Kier’s purpose is to sustainably deliver infrastructure which is vital to the UK. Kier is a leading provider of highways, utilities, construction and property developments and committed to delivering for communities and leaving lasting legacies through their work.

How has Kier embraced digital transformation on the Fitzalan High School project?

“Information has been successfully shared and utilised throughout the project. Adoption of a managed common data environment (COE) has enabled and underpinned our collaborative approach resulting in clearer responsibility and more accurate data. The COE is our single source of coordinated information flow and ensures that everyone who is contributing to the project is viewing and interacting with the same set of quality assured, and validated, information,” said Jonathan Walters, BIM Manager.

What role did Revizto play in the project?

Revizto allowed Kier to view the entire project by federating all intelligent BIM data, including reality capture, into a centralized, user-friendly location and got all teams in-sync. The Kier team was able to view issues in native modelling software, assign accountability and track changes to ensure all issues are quickly and fully resolved or mitigated, so that the team can also contribute from the office or on-site.

Jonathan believes that Revizto provides a platform that enables them to keep all trades on task and monitor their progress in the field, and provides access to all relevant project data on a mobile device.

All the supply chain partners (design team and sub-contractors) have embraced the implementation of Revizto, with their models scheduled to automatically upload to Revizto on a weekly basis. The main file formats that are being exported from the authoring tools into Revizto is .RVT,and .IFC.

Kier has utilised the capability of Revizto to federate models from a vast array of project stakeholders and inform our Project Information Model, including Architect, Structural Engineer, M&E Engineer, Sprinkler System Designer, M&E Subcontractor, Steel Fabricator, SFS Contractor, Swimming Pool Designer, and the Kitchen Designer.

Embedding this collaborative approach through a single-point platform, like Revizto, has facilitated an environment of transparency and demonstrated how early engagement, integration and collaboration with the design teams and supply chain improves project performance by focusing on solving problems holistically. Training was provided to Kier’s supply chain partners via in-house workshops and supplemented by training directly from Revizto.

What is next for Kier and Revizto?

“Kier and Revizto will continue to collaborate in partnership aligning strategically to ensure an evolutionary and dynamic relationship.

“A key immediate requirement is developing the security aspects to ensure that the use of Revizto is possible on all projects and adheres to our strict requirements,” said Colin Bell, Head of digital construction.

Digital by Default Strategy

Through the Digital by Default program, Kier has been able to harmonise, rationalise and digitalise the project information for Fitzalan High School. In doing so, Kier has not only applied software and tools to improve its productivity, but has also used these tools as a catalyst to drive the digital readiness of their supply chain. The Kier team has also utilised various forms of information to maximise engagement with the client and wider project stakeholders.

The result has been an increased and improved client and stakeholder engagement, integration of an enhanced and innovative approach, where tasks that have historically taken days are completed in hours, and clearly managed and articulated communication that the project would be delivered to the original contract program despite global issues relating to health and product availability.
