The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has chosen Mace to assist in clean-up efforts at 17 locations throughout the UK

Mace will work along with AtkinsRealis, Gleeds, and i3Works, as part of a four-year partnership with the NDA.

The NDA is a government-appointed body responsible for the nuclear clean-up.

The Mace, AtkinsRealis, and Gleeds partnership has been working with the NDA for the past two years under an existing framework, and i3Works has recently joined the team.

“While the NDA’s mission to clean up the UK’s early nuclear legacy will take over 100 years to realise, we know we’ve got an important role to play now, setting the right tone and implementing world-class project & programme management and project controls principles that will benefit the NDA in the long-term,” commented Matthew Risk, framework manager for Mace.

A four-year plan for nuclear clean-up

The team will be the exclusive provider of the four-year framework, which was established through the Crown Commercial Service (CCS) to help the NDA address the challenges associated with the country’s nuclear legacy.

The NDA’s priorities include addressing high-hazard materials, spent fuel, nuclear substances, and highly radioactive waste at its sites. Once these are addressed, the focus will shift towards dismantling and removing defunct nuclear facilities.

A new approach to NDA management

The team will appoint a panel of leading professionals in project and programme management. They will also introduce project controls to support NDA initiatives for site-specific needs in the future. The partnership aims to increase the NDA’s existing resources and bring a diverse range of skills and expertise to the organisation.

“The size, scale and importance of the UK’s nuclear decommissioning challenge means that we need the best and brightest minds on the case,” said Rachel O’Donnell, Mace’s director for nuclear and energy.

“This alliance of consultancy firms not only presents a talent pool of over 4,000 suitably qualified people but draws on a longstanding relationship with the NDA – meaning a deep understanding of its needs and opportunities – and offers access to a diverse knowledge bank of wider industry-leading construction and consultancy best practice,” she concluded.
