Pride in the Job is the most highly regarded competition in the house-building industry and the prestigious benchmark for exceptional site managers

Established over 40 years ago, the competition is central to NHBC’s purpose to raise standards in house building.

Pride in the Job inspires site managers and their teams to deliver the highest-quality homes. Whether working to win their first award or to continue a winning streak, it encourages the dedication to deliver exceptional quality standards.

And the competition is accessible to all as every site manager with a site registered for an NHBC Buildmark warranty is automatically entered.

Pride in the Job covers England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man, and is open to businesses of all sizes with no entry forms or fees involved.

Inspiring quality and excellence

Pride in the Job helps to raise standards in the industry in many ways. Aside from the competitive element that drives site managers to focus on quality, it also encourages new perspectives on how the house-building industry currently does things and, of course, how processes and techniques might be improved.

This leads to innovations, changes in practices and other cumulative developments which, over time, help to set the new improved standard.

These awards also have an enduring impact. Assistant site managers working with winning site managers consistently benefit from their mentorship.

As those people progress through their own careers, eventually becoming site managers and sharing their knowledge and skills with the next generation, we see the ongoing impact as the entire industry benefits from improvements through shared learning and best practice.

A new category for 2023

Just as the house-building sector is constantly working to adapt to changes and develop to meet new challenges, Pride in the Job also reflects this ever-changing industry.

That is why 2023 is the right time to introduce a new award. Alongside the existing categories of small builder, medium builder, large builder and multi-storey, there will now be a fifth award category: high-rise.

How Pride in the Job works

The Pride in the Job competition cycle takes place over 18 months with judging beginning
in July each year. It involves meticulous scoring, verification and thousands of site
inspections to uncover our Quality Award winning site managers.

Quality Award winners are announced in June, with Regional Events commencing every September, running until the end of November and are now in full swing for the
2023 Awards.

The Regional Award winners from every region then compete to win the national Supreme Awards in January. For the initial nominations, sites are judged by the local NHBC building inspector and their inspection manager. For the Quality Award, this involves the local NHBC regional director and an inspection manager.

At the Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards level, the local regional director, another regional director and an external judge will inspect the sites. For the Supreme Awards, two regional directors and an external judge will determine the ultimate winners.

Winning site managers demonstrate incredible dedication, passion, commitment and leadership to produce homes of exceptional quality. The judges look for those special qualities that turn a good site manager into a truly great one.

Make your mark

Whether a site manager is targeting their first ever Quality Award, striving for a Seal of
Excellence or achieving the coveted Regional and Supreme Awards, Pride in the Job is the competition that all site managers want to win.

It demonstrates sincere dedication and establishes a reputation for excellent site management and homes of the highest quality.

Darren Horner, regional director at NHBC, said: “Pride in the Job is a prestigious competition that helps drive improvements in build quality and underpins NHBC’s purpose of raising standards in house building.

The competition highlights the ongoing effort and dedication of site managers across the UK and recognises the excellent examples they set for everyone in our industry, their diligence and the legacy they leave behind in the form of much-needed high-quality new homes.”
