HS2, the organisation behind the UK’s largest infrastructure project, has signed up to support CO2nstruct Zero: the Construction Leadership Council’s carbon reduction campaign

HS2 Limited has confirmed that it will become a CO2nstruct Zero business partner, following the footsteps of more than 80 organisations that have already pledged their support to the reducing carbon initiative.

The organisation delivering the UK’s largest infrastructure project, has already developed its own Net Zero Carbon Plan which details targets and commitments that will make net zero a reality from 2035.

HS2 is making infrastructure more sustainable

By being the first transport organisation to secure PAS 2080 accreditation and also requiring that its contractors reduce their carbon by 50%, HS2 is slowly changing the way things are done. HS2 will now apply this sustainable outlook and expertise to CO2nstruct Zero.

The company has already been selected to lead one of the campaign’s major interventions this year, developing a roadmap to move towards zero diesel construction sites.

‘Low carbon materials, alternative fuels, renewable energy and new construction methods’

Neil Wait, the HS2 head of environmental sciences commented:

“As we design and build HS2, we’re working with our supply chain, industry groups and research organisations to implement low carbon materials, alternative fuels, renewable energy and new construction methods to reduce the carbon footprint of the programme and support the decarbonisation of the UK construction sector.”

‘Ultimately CO2nstruct Zero is about a sector deciding that it wants to change its performance on carbon, and agreeing to work together to do so’

CLC co-chair Andy Mitchell added:

“Ultimately CO2nstruct Zero is about a sector deciding that it wants to change its performance on carbon, and agreeing to work together to do so. We can do this most effectively when we have strong leadership from across the sector. I am delighted that HS2 Ltd is showing this leadership by signing up as a CO2nstruct Zero Business Partner.
