Construction on the modern recycling centre is set to start 22 March and will replace the current site at Ketteringham later this year

There will be low-level bins meaning people will not have to climb steps to recycle their waste, and there will be plenty of parking for cars, bicycles and vehicles with trailers, plus a one-way traffic system to smooth traffic flow and reduce queues.

Bargain hunters will also benefit from a new large reuse shop, which will be eight times the size of the current one at Ketteringham.

The new Norwich South recycling centre will complement the new £2.75m Norwich North recycling centre, which is already under construction and on track to open this autumn.

Konect Bus operate all the Norwich park and ride sites and services on behalf of Norfolk County Council.

The Norwich South recycling centre is being built on an underused part of the Harford park and ride site using available spare space.

The construction will not affect the day to day operation of the park and ride and the site is expected to reopen as planned next month when demand is expected to increase as lockdown restrictions are eased.

Recycling facilities fit for the future

Andy Grant, cabinet member for environment and waste, said: “It’s great to see the teams are starting work as planned despite the challenges brought by the pandemic.

“With construction already well underway on the new Norwich North recycling centre we’re on schedule to open the two new sites later this year.

“Together the two new recycling centres are a £4.65m investment in providing recycling facilities fit for the future of the growing greater Norwich area.

“I’m particularly pleased that the large modern sites will give us the space for much bigger reuse shops as each of our popular reuse shops already stops on average 100 tonnes of reusable items being thrown away every year.”

Jeremy Cooper, managing director Konectbus Ltd, added: “We are pleased to have worked with Norfolk to incorporate the recycling facility at Harford without impacting on our Park & Ride operation and believe that the conscientious recyclers will want to share their journey into the heart of the city by travelling on Park & Ride.”
