A new multi-million-pound sports hall is being built at King Edward VI Grammar School in Louth, Lincolnshire

The five-court sports hall, dance studio, fitness suite, changing rooms, and office space will be provided by Lancashire-based contractor Collinson Construction.

The double-height sports hall has been designed under Sport England guidance and will feature an external viewing platform overlooking the school’s green fields and new football pitch.

The physical and mental health of the Louth community

The managing director at Collinson Construction Robert Duxbury commented:

“We’re pleased to be working with King Edward Grammar to bring these fantastic facilities to life, which will not only enhance the sports provision for the school’s pupils but will benefit the wider Louth community too.”

James Lascelles, headmaster at King Edward VI Grammar School also added:

“We’re delighted to be working alongside Collinson Construction to create this state-of-the-art space that will serve our students and the local community for many generations to come.

“As well as enhancing the quality of our sports facilities here at the school the new indoor facility will be a real asset to the wider Louth community, enabling people to train and play whatever the weather and supporting their physical and mental health.”

Enhancing existing surroundings

The grammar school’s existing history, architecture, and surroundings remain at the heart of the project and the new building has been designed with a view to complementing the current grounds.

It was decided that a natural palette would be used for the building materials: the external façade of the sports hall is to be clad in cedar timber, whilst a dark grey profiled roof will work in harmony with the traditional dark grey slate roofs that adorn the current school building.

In order to maintain a heritage link to the school’s Grade II listed buildings, the single-storey ancillary building will be built in brickwork and stonework closely matching that of neighbouring St James’ Church.
