In a major milestone for one of Stockport’s most anticipated transport projects, the construction of a long-awaited railway station in Cheadle is set to begin soon
The construction of Cheadle station has overcome a key obstacle that stalled progress after years of detailed technical work by Stockport Council and rail industry partners.
Councillor Mark Roberts, leader of Stockport Council, said: “This is a hugely significant moment for Cheadle and for Stockport.
“For years we’ve fought for this station because we know the difference it will make to residents, businesses and the future prosperity of the area.”
Possible delays on the Cheadle station line “can be reasonably managed”
The latest assessment by Network Rail and Northern Trains has now concluded that Cheadle station can be introduced without removing a significant barrier that had put the project at risk.
It showed that the risks of delay to services along the line can be reasonably managed and shouldn’t be considered a reason to stop further progress on the project.
Cheadle will be served by the rail network for the first time in 60 years
The breakthrough follows a long campaign by Stockport Council and partners to secure permission for the station, which reconnects Cheadle to the rail network for the first time in 60 years and improves access to jobs, education and opportunities across the region.
“Cheadle Station has always been about improving connections, creating opportunities and making it easier for people to travel for work, education and leisure, and I am delighted that the highways work can now start on site later this month thanks to the persistence and partnership of all involved,” Roberts commented.
Work on the highway near the station’s location will now commence following months of detailed technical work.

The construction of Cheadle station can now be added to the growing list of transport transformation happening in the borough of Stockport.
Alongside the award-winning Stockport Interchange and plans moving forward to bring Metrolink trams to the borough, Cheadle station will help create a new generation of transport connections that support homes, jobs, businesses and investment.
Together, these projects are shaping the borough’s future as one of the best-connected destinations in the north of England.
