Manchester Airports Group has selected Costain to design critical upgrades to Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands airports

Costain has been chosen to create an outline design for a series of enhancements across the three airports, to ensure that they meet new security requirements from the Department of Transport and improve the safety of customer journeys for the estimated 50m passengers who travel through the airports each year.

Upgrades will include changes to restricted access areas such as authorised staff-only areas, and gatehouses leading to aircraft and passport control.

Manchester, London Stansted, and East Midlands airports will all benefit from the upgrades

Procured via the Engineering, Project Management and Design Framework, Costain’s services will span a range of advisory roles, such as:

  • Geotechnical services during assessments of ground conditions
  • Surveys to located underground utilites and any potential hazards
  • Providing transport planning and traffic modelling to understand vehicle usage and travel patterns in and around the airport site
  • Modular and automated design techniques to increase productivity and reliability, while anticipating future demand such as charging points for electric vehicles
  • Stakeholder engagement with the airports, airline operators, security teams, fire and rescue service and border control

Security compliance and traffic will be of particular focus at EMA

Costain will consider reconfiguration of the terminal forecourt and car park at East Midlands to accommodate predicted growth in passenger numbers. The outline design will aim to improve traffic flow during peak times and provide a dedicated space for drop-offs.

Andy Clarke, director for integrated transport at Costain, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to shape vital new infrastructure which will transform the performance of three leading regional airports.

“Our Northwest-based Design Hub will deploy modular and automated design techniques, alongside the findings of a BREEAM assessment, to ensure that the construction of the new civils infrastructure is cost-effective, sustainable and efficient.

“We will also consider the human factors which will influence how people respond to the new infrastructure, embedding Safe by Design principles so that everyone enjoys a seamless travel experience.”
