Lambeth Council and Network Rail have revealed a new plan for the London Waterloo Station revamp, which will include the surrounding Waterloo and South Bank area

The London Waterloo Station revamp sets out a series of long-term aspirations to deliver improvements to both the station and the wider area that will make it easier and safer for people to move around, promote active travel and support the local economy.

What are the suggested improvements and upgrades?

The redevelopment plan for London Waterloo Station and its surroundings encompasses numerous enhancements, such as over 40 upgraded walking and cycling routes, a redesigned northern concourse, and the addition of a new southern concourse.

Further improvements include upgraded public spaces, the introduction of 1,900m2 of green space with hundreds of new trees, and an enhanced bus and taxi interchange for improved accessibility.

London Waterloo station is the third busiest transport hub in the country

With 57.8m entries and exits last year and a major gateway into the city, the revamp aims to transform the area into a connected, safe, and thriving net-zero neighbourhood with an integrated world-class station at its heart.

Lambeth Council, Network Rail, and partners will propose a short-term investment programme to begin delivering the vision.

Further engagement with residents, businesses, and stakeholders will refine and develop detailed proposals.

A world-class transport hub

Network Rail chair, Lord Peter Hendy of Richmond Hill, said: “We are delighted to be working with Lambeth Council on an exciting long-term plan to transform London Waterloo station.

“London Waterloo is iconic, and one of the busiest stations in the country, and it is imperative this station continues to evolve to ensure it is a world class transport hub and meets the needs of the millions of passengers that use the station each year, today and into the future.”
