Interserve has secured a £4m contract to transform the SciTech Centre at Barnsley College to create a new Digital Innovation Hub

Interserve Construction will deliver the refurbishment of the four-storey Sci-Tech Centre on the Barnsley College campus to create the Digital Innovation Hub.

The scheme is supported by The Department of Education and The Sheffield City Region LEP.

Barnsley College, which was rated outstanding in its Ofsted inspection, has an on-going successful relationship with stakeholders across Sheffield City Region to support South Yorkshire’s digital skills development.

The college has been deemed the only provider offering T-Level qualifications in 2020 to meet employer demand.

The new Digital Innovation Hub at Barnsley procured under the YORbuild framework, will have a special focus on digital industries including cyber security, network technologies, AI and VR alongside software and programming.

The new hub will incorporate industry-standard high-spec technology rooms used for gaming, rendering and 3D printing.

The design incorporates an innovative HeartFelt ceiling system developed by Hunter Douglas Architectural, which offers an advanced, budget-friendly, ceiling system with optimal acoustic control in a material that is 100% recyclable.

Supporting education, innovation and research

Paul Ellenor, regional director at Interserve Construction, said: “Interserve Construction has strong track record in the further education sector across the Yorkshire and Humber region having demonstrated our capabilities in delivering projects supporting education, innovation and research.

“Having recently completed the Engineering Heartspace facility for the University of Sheffield, an innovative refashioning of the university’s Grade II-listed Sir Frederick Mapping Building, and the new Hull York Medical School for the University of York, we are delighted to be working on this new project with Barnsley College.”

Work has already commenced on the Digital Innovation Hub, which will be handed over in three phases through August to September.
