Joint venture Nuclear Decommissioning Ltd (NDL) has been appointed to support a major, multi-million-pound decommissioning services framework for Dounreay Site Restoration Limited (DSRL) at the Dounreay nuclear site in Scotland

The JV, which includes professional services firm WYG plc, Shepley Engineers, REACT Engineering, and James Fisher Nuclear Ltd will support the clean-up and demolition of Britain’s former centre of fast reactor research and development.

The NDL Partners have worked together for many years, delivering successful decommissioning projects. For Dounreay, the partnership will contribute a range of multidisciplinary services to make the site safe; from civil and structural engineering to design, architecture, project management, and more.

The framework will run for four years initially with the option of a three-year extension. NDL is expected to commence work on-site before the start of summer this year.

Dounreay was the UK’s centre of fast reactor research and development for 60 years and is the home of three reactors and supporting facilities, including reprocessing plants. As one of the most complex nuclear site closure projects in Europe, it marks a major hazard reduction milestone for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s (NDA) nationwide efforts to return its sites to public use.

NDL spokesman, Paul Read, managing director of James Fisher Nuclear, said: “This marks a strategic commitment by NDL to the future of the Caithness and Sutherland area.

“We are very proud to have a strong track record of delivery in accelerated decommissioning within the NDA Estate and investing in local skills. The team at NDL is looking forward to exploring opportunities to bring our expertise to the Dounreay site.”

Andy Gillespie, NDL director and WYG group commercial director, added: “We’ve been working with our partners from NDL for many years and have successfully delivered decommissioning works at other nuclear sites in the UK including Sellafield.

“Together, as a group, we provide a depth of experience that will be invaluable at Dounreay. This expertise and ability to operate in a collaborative way will allow us to work with the local supply chain to deliver a wide range of decommissioning work.”
