Contracts have been approved to build 140 new affordable homes in Ferguslie and Johnstone, Scotland

The finance, resources and customer services policy board approved works for more than £19m to create affordable homes as part of its new build programme and Strategic Housing Investment Programme.

101 new affordable homes will be built in the Tannahill area of Ferguslie by the end of 2021, and a further 39 properties will be built on Auchengreoch Road in Johnstone by May 2020 – with the detailed designs for the housing to be finalised with residents within these communities.

The two new developments form part of the commitment to providing high-quality, affordable homes and is being part-funded by the Scottish Government’s Affordable Housing Programme.

Councillor Marie McGurk, convener of Renfrewshire Council’s communities, housing and planning policy board, said: “We are committed to providing homes and communities that encourage people to come and live and work in Renfrewshire.

“I look forward to seeing the communities in both Ferguslie and Johnstone enhanced as we address increasing demand for housing in these areas with two new developments.

“This investment will ensure people can access homes they are proud to live in as we look to create positive, thriving communities throughout the area.”

Following the completion of the contract awards, the new homes in Ferguslie will be built by A S Homes (Scotland) Ltd and McTaggart Construction Ltd will carry out the works in Johnstone.

Councillor John Shaw, convener of the finance, resources and customer services policy board, commented: “It will be fantastic to see these new homes built in Ferguslie and Johnstone and it’s great to see the contracts include vital community benefits for the young people in the area.

“Modern apprenticeships and work experience will be offered to those interested in the trade, as well as visits by the construction companies to local schools to offer advice and guidance.

“We want to help people in Renfrewshire wherever we can, whether that’s providing a step onto the employment ladder or giving a school pupil the moment which sparks their career ambitions, and that is why it so important that community benefits are included in all our contract awards.”
