Mike Foy appointed as CIOB vice president

Mike Foy OBE, FCIOB, currently at the Department for Education assisting on the implementation of Modern Methods of Construction for its schools programme, has been appointed vice president of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)

Mike Foy will follow Mark Beard FCIOB, Chairman of construction group Beard, who will become CIOB President in 2020, and Professor Charles Egbu FCIOB, Dean of School of the Built Environment and Architecture at London Southbank University, who becomes CIOB President later this year.

In 2021 Mike will become the 118th President of the CIOB.

On being informed of his successful appointment as vice president, Mike Foy said: “I have been a member of the CIOB for many years, joining through the technician grade, having started my working life in apprentice and trainee roles.

“The Institute has provided the opportunity for me to progress through the membership levels, culminating in Fellowship in my thirties. Given the long history I have with the Institute, I’m thrilled that I can support the Institute and the wider industry and continue to advocate vocational training, graduate training and the creation of opportunities for enthusiastic people to progress via various routes.”

Prior to his current role at DfE he led a multi-disciplinary team of project directors responsible for the development and delivery of schools in the West Midlands and North West of England. He has also held several director positions across a range of local authority service areas for many years.

Mike led a local authority in implementing modernised construction procurement methods resulting in recognition as a Beacon Council for ‘Rethinking Construction’ – the only local authority in the North West to achieve such recognition and one of only 6 in the UK.  This followed the Latham report – ‘Constructing the team’ which focussed on collaborative working – a theme which is just as relevant today as it was at the time of Latham and Egan.
